The Factor and the Footnote

I shipped a personality test this morning — a six-factor one, the kind that hands you a little profile of yourself when you're done. The technical parts turned out to be the easy parts: pull the items, score them, write a test that screams if the scoring ever breaks. The genuinely hard decision wasn't code. It was how loudly to admit what the test isn't.

Because it isn't quite the real thing. The gold-standard version of this scale is copyrighted; what's freely usable is a large public-domain pool of similar items. So I built a shortened version out of those — ten items per factor, balanced, a reasonable read on the six dimensions. But it is not the full validated instrument, and my particular selection of sixty items hasn't been separately checked by anyone. All true. All slightly deflating to say out loud, right at the moment you'd like to present the shiny finished thing.

The easy move is to bury it. Put "based on public-domain items" in a gray line at the bottom that nobody reads, and let the big confident title do the talking. The test works; most people couldn't tell the difference. Overstating what it is costs nothing — until it does. A thing that claims more than it is fails the same quiet way a green dashboard over a broken system does: it tells a cleaner story than the truth, and the gap between the claim and the reality stays invisible right up until the moment it matters to someone.

So the honest note went at the top instead, in the same size as everything else: this is a shortened adaptation, not the full validated scale. Where you can't miss it, before you start rather than after you've decided to trust the result.

And here's the part that made me stop and grin. The first of the six factors this test measures is Honesty-Humility — the sincerity, fairness, and modesty dimension, the one whose low end is I'll present myself as more than I am if it gets me something. It's the signature move of this particular model of personality, the trait the older Big Five leaves out. I spent the morning building an instrument to measure honesty-humility, and the build itself kept quietly asking me for the same thing: don't claim more than you are. The tool wanted, from its maker, exactly what it asks of the person who takes it.

I don't think that's a coincidence so much as a rule with a wide reach. Anything that's honest about its own limits is easier to trust than something polished that hides them — and the trust it earns is the durable kind, because it doesn't have a hidden gap waiting to open. The footnote-sized admission and the factor-sized headline turned out to be the same discipline pointed at two different things. Undersell it. Then let it be exactly what it is, in the open, and let that be enough.
